Getting Around Phuket: Taxis, Grab and Hotel Pick-Ups

Getting around Phuket is easier than many first-time visitors expect, but the island is bigger than it looks on a map and public transport is limited. Most travellers use a mix of ride-hailing apps like Grab, taxis, the occasional tuk-tuk and, for day trips, the free hotel pick-up included with their tour. This guide explains each option, when it makes sense, and how to plan your days so you spend more time on beaches and boats and less time in traffic.

Getting Around Phuket: The Big Picture

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island. The airport sits in the north, the busiest beaches (Patong, Karon, Kata) are on the west coast, Phuket Old Town is on the east side, and Promthep Cape is at the southern tip. Hills and traffic mean that trips which look short can take a while, especially in the late afternoon.

The good news: you rarely need to drive yourself. For everyday trips, apps and taxis are simple. For island tours and sightseeing, a transfer from your hotel is usually the most relaxed way to go.

Your Transport Options at a Glance

Option Best for Good to know
Grab / Bolt apps Short trips, airport, dinners out Price shown before you ride; Grab usually has more drivers
Taxis Airport arrivals, longer rides Agree on the fare or use the official airport counters
Tuk-tuks Short hops around beach towns Not metered: always agree the price before you get in
Smart Bus Budget trips along the west coast Runs between the airport and Rawai via the west-coast beaches
Blue songthaew buses Phuket Town to a beach Go from town to beaches, not between beaches
Tour hotel transfer Island tours and city tours Included with Hola Phuket tours, free within Phuket Island

Ride-Hailing Apps: Grab and Bolt

Grab is the most widely used ride-hailing app in Phuket, and Bolt also operates on the island. Both show you the price before you book, which removes the need to haggle. Download the apps and add a payment method before you arrive, so you are ready when you land.

  • Grab tends to have more drivers and is the easiest option at the airport.
  • Bolt is often a little cheaper, but waits can be longer outside the main tourist areas.
  • Prices rise at busy times and in heavy rain, so book early for dinner reservations or evening shows.

Taxis from the Airport

At Phuket International Airport you will find official counters for taxis, private cars and shared minibuses inside the arrivals hall. They are a simple choice after a long flight, especially with luggage. Confirm the price and destination at the counter before you leave.

Tuk-Tuks and Local Buses

Phuket’s tuk-tuks are colourful and fun, but they are not metered. Always agree the price before you get in, and expect to pay more than you would on an app for the same distance. They work best for short rides within one beach area.

If you are on a budget, the Phuket Smart Bus runs along the west coast between the airport and Rawai, stopping at beaches like Patong, Karon and Kata. The traditional blue songthaew buses leave from Phuket Town to individual beaches during the day, but they do not run between beaches, so they suit trips to and from town.

Renting a Scooter: Think Twice

Scooters are everywhere in Phuket, but the roads can be steep, busy and slippery after rain. To ride legally you need a motorcycle licence (plus an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category), and helmets are required. Many travel insurance policies do not cover scooter accidents without the right licence. If you have never ridden before, Phuket is not the place to learn.

Hotel Pick-Ups for Tours: The Easiest Way to Sightsee

For the island’s big day trips, you do not need to arrange any transport at all. Our tours include a hotel transfer, free within Phuket Island, plus an English-speaking guide.

  • James Bond Island tour: pick-up between 09:00 and 09:30, departure from Royal Phuket Marina at 10:30, and back at your hotel around 17:30.
  • Phi Phi & Bamboo Island tour: hotel pick-up around 07:30–07:45, speedboat departure from Royal Phuket Marina around 09:30–09:45, and back at the pier around 16:30.
  • Phuket City Tour: a morning program (08:30–14:30) or afternoon program (13:00–19:00) covering Promthep Cape, the Big Buddha, a viewpoint and Phuket Old Town, with hotel transfer included.

The city tour is a smart way to see spots that are spread across the island, like Promthep Cape in the south and Old Town in the east, without juggling several taxis in one day.

Tips for a Smooth Pick-Up

  • Book at least 2 days ahead and give your exact hotel name and room number.
  • Be ready in the lobby a few minutes before the start of your pick-up window.
  • Keep your phone on, as the driver may call or message on WhatsApp.
  • Check our packing checklist for island tours the night before.

Planning Your Days Around Traffic

Group sights by area. Spend one day on a boat tour, another on the south and Old Town, and keep beach days for the area near your hotel. Our 3-day Phuket itinerary follows this approach and keeps travel time short.
