What to Pack for an Island Tour in Phuket: The Complete Checklist

A day on the water in Phuket means strong sun, salt water and a few hours away from shops. Packing the right things makes the difference between a comfortable day and a sunburnt one. Here is our checklist, based on years of running island tours.

The essentials

  • Swimwear: wear it under your clothes so you are ready at the first swim stop.
  • Quick-dry towel: light and easy to carry.
  • Sun protection: high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat with a strap so it does not blow away on the speedboat.
  • Waterproof phone case or dry bag: spray from the boat and wet hands are the main risks for phones.
  • Cash in small notes: for drinks, snacks, toilets and souvenirs. Card payment is rare on the islands.
  • Water bottle: soft drinks are included on our tours, but having your own bottle helps on hot days.

Nice to have

  • Rash guard or light long-sleeve shirt: the best protection against sunburn while snorkeling.
  • Water shoes or sandals: some beaches have coral fragments or rocks.
  • Seasickness tablets: take one 30–60 minutes before departure if you are sensitive, especially for the open-sea crossing to Phi Phi.
  • Change of clothes: dry clothes for the ride back make the day much more comfortable.
  • Small backpack: easier than a bag on a moving boat.

What you do not need to bring

On our Phi Phi and James Bond Island tours, these are already included:

  • Snorkeling mask and snorkel (Phi Phi tour)
  • Sea canoeing equipment (James Bond Island tour)
  • Life jackets for all ages
  • Lunch and soft drinks
  • National park entrance fees

Leave valuables such as passports and jewellery in your hotel safe.

Packing for a city tour

The Phuket City Tour visits temples and the Big Buddha, so bring clothing that covers shoulders and knees, comfortable walking shoes for Old Town and a little cash for coffee and snacks.

Be kind to the sea

  • Choose reef-safe sunscreen without oxybenzone.
  • Never stand on or touch coral.
  • Do not feed fish or monkeys.
  • Take all your rubbish back with you.
