Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and one of the best bases in Asia for beaches, island hopping and culture. If it is your first visit, here are ten experiences that should be on your list, from famous day trips to simple local pleasures.
1. Paddle into the hidden lagoons of Phang Nga Bay
Sea canoeing through the caves of Koh Hong into silent lagoons surrounded by cliffs is one of Thailand’s most unique experiences. It is part of the James Bond Island tour.
2. See James Bond Island
Koh Tapu, the needle-shaped rock from The Man with the Golden Gun, is the most famous view in Phang Nga Bay. Read our James Bond Island guide.
3. Have lunch in a floating village
Koh Panyee is a fishing village built on stilts beside a giant rock, with its own mosque, school and floating football pitch.
4. Visit the Phi Phi Islands
Turquoise water, white sand and dramatic cliffs: the Phi Phi Islands tour includes Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Maya Bay and snorkeling at Khai Island.
5. Snorkel with tropical fish
The shallow reefs around Khai Island and Tonsai Bay are perfect for beginners. Masks are provided on our Phi Phi tour.
6. Watch the sunset at Promthep Cape
Phuket’s southern tip offers the island’s most famous sunset view over the Andaman Sea.
7. Visit the Big Buddha
The 45-metre marble Buddha on Nakkerd Hill has panoramic views of Chalong and Kata. Remember to cover shoulders and knees.
8. Walk the streets of Phuket Old Town
Pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafés, street art and Chinese shrines. Our city tour guide explains what to see, and the Phuket City Tour covers points 6, 7 and 8 in one trip.
9. Eat like a local
Try Phuket specialities such as mee hokkien noodles, moo hong (slow-braised pork belly) and a southern Thai curry. Old Town and the local markets are the best places to start.
10. Relax on a quiet beach
After a few busy days, spend an afternoon on a calmer beach such as Kata Noi, Nai Harn or the island stop at Koh Yao on our James Bond Island tour.
How many days do you need?
With four or five days you can comfortably do two island trips (James Bond Island and Phi Phi), a city tour and a beach day. If you visit in the rainy season (May to October), keep an extra day free in case a boat trip is moved. Our guide to the best time to visit Phuket explains the seasons.
