Promthep Cape is the most famous place to watch the sunset in Phuket. This rocky headland sits at the southern tip of the island, and every evening visitors gather on its viewpoint to watch the sun sink into the Andaman Sea. In this Promthep Cape sunset guide you will find when to arrive, what to see around the cape, how to get there and how to combine it with a guided tour of Phuket.
Why the Promthep Cape sunset is so special
From the cape you look west and south over open water, with small islands on the horizon and green hills behind you. On a clear evening the sky turns orange, pink and purple, and the sun drops straight into the sea. It is a simple experience, but it is one of the moments many travellers remember most from their trip.
The viewpoint is also easy to enjoy for everyone. You do not need to hike or take a boat, so it works well for families, couples and older travellers.
What to see at Promthep Cape
Most people come for the sunset, but there is more to see if you arrive a little early.
- The main viewpoint: a wide terrace with low walls where most visitors stand to watch the sun go down.
- The shrine: a small shrine near the viewpoint, decorated with many elephant figures left by local people as offerings. Please be respectful when you visit.
- The lighthouse: a white lighthouse close to the car park that is a good spot for photos.
- The walking trail: a path leads down the headland towards the sea. It is rocky and uneven, so only go with good shoes and come back before it gets dark.
- Food and drink stalls: small stalls near the car park sell drinks, snacks and souvenirs.
Best time to visit
Because Phuket is close to the equator, sunset time does not change much during the year. It is usually somewhere between about 6:15 pm and 6:45 pm. Check the exact time on your phone on the day you go.
Try to arrive 45 to 60 minutes before sunset. The viewpoint gets very busy, especially in the high season from November to April, and the best spots along the wall fill up early. Arriving early also gives you time to see the shrine and lighthouse in good light.
In the rainy season clouds can hide the sun, but the sky can still be dramatic. If you want to know what to expect each month, read our guide to the best time to visit Phuket.
How to get to Promthep Cape
Promthep Cape is in the far south of Phuket, near Rawai and Nai Harn. From busy beach areas such as Patong the drive takes some time, and traffic is heavier in the late afternoon.
The easiest option is to visit with a guide and hotel transfer, so you do not need to worry about the road, parking or finding a ride back after dark. Many taxis wait in the area at sunset, but prices and availability can vary.

Tips for a great sunset at Promthep Cape
- Arrive early to get a good spot along the wall.
- Bring water, a hat and sunscreen, as it can be hot before the sun goes down.
- Wear comfortable shoes if you want to walk the trail.
- Keep an eye on your phone and bag in the crowd.
- Use insect repellent, as mosquitoes come out after sunset.
- Stay a few minutes after the sun disappears. The colours in the sky are often best just after sunset.
