Speedboat at a white-sand beach with turquoise water on the Phi Phi Islands

Phi Phi Islands Day Trip from Phuket: What to Expect

The Phi Phi Islands are the postcard image of Thailand: tall limestone cliffs, turquoise water and white-sand bays. A speedboat day trip from Phuket lets you see the best of both islands, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh, in one day. Here is exactly what to expect.

Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh: what is the difference?

Phi Phi Don is the larger, inhabited island, with Tonsai village, restaurants and the island’s pier. Phi Phi Leh is smaller, uninhabited and protected as part of a national park. It is home to the famous Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave. A day trip visits both, plus nearby snorkeling spots.

The highlights

Maya Bay

Maya Bay became world famous through the film The Beach (2000). After years of heavy tourism it was closed from 2018 to 2022 so the coral and marine life could recover. Today it is managed carefully: swimming in Maya Bay is not allowed, and the bay closes every year during August and September. It reopened for the 2026 high season on 1 October. Even without swimming, standing on the sand surrounded by cliffs is unforgettable.

Pileh Lagoon

Pileh Lagoon is an almost enclosed bay of emerald water ringed by cliffs. The boat slowly drifts inside so you can take in the view and the photos.

Viking Cave

Viking Cave is known for the swiftlet nests collected from its walls, a valuable ingredient in bird’s nest soup. Boats view it from the water.

Snorkeling at Tonsai Bay and Khai Island

Bring your face to the water and you will see colourful reef fish within seconds. Khai Island, on the way back, has shallow, clear water that is ideal for beginners and children.

What is included in the price

The tour costs 2,800 THB per adult and 2,100 THB per child, including:

  • Round-trip hotel transfer
  • English-speaking guide
  • Lunch and soft drinks
  • Snorkeling equipment and life jackets

Tips for a great Phi Phi day trip

  • Seasickness: the speedboat crosses open sea for about an hour. If you get seasick, take a tablet before you leave and sit near the back of the boat.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen: it protects the coral you came to see.
  • Waterproof bag: keep your phone and cash dry on the boat.
  • Season: the sea is calmest from November to April. In the rainy season some trips can be changed or cancelled for safety; if we cancel, you can move to another date or get a full refund.
