Koh Panyee floating village is one of the most surprising stops on a day trip to Phang Nga Bay. Built on stilts in the shadow of a huge limestone rock, this Muslim fishing community has wooden walkways instead of streets, a mosque and a famous floating football pitch. On our tour a la Isla James Bond, Koh Panyee is where you stop for lunch. This guide explains what the village is, how a visit works and how to be a respectful guest.
What is Koh Panyee floating village?
Koh Panyee (also written Ko Panyi) is a village in Phang Nga Bay, north-east of Phuket. Almost the entire settlement sits on wooden and concrete stilts over the sea, wrapped around the base of a tall limestone island. Only a small part of the rock itself is used, so homes, shops, a school and the mosque all stand above the water.
The village has a strong identity of its own. Most residents are Muslim and many families still make a living from the sea, through fishing and fish farming, alongside tourism.
A short history
According to local history, Koh Panyee was founded around 200 years ago by a few fishing families who came from Java, in Indonesia, looking for good fishing grounds. Because they could not own land, they built their homes over the water. More families joined over time, and the small camp grew into the village you see today.
The floating football pitch
Koh Panyee is famous for its floating football field. With no flat land to play on, local kids built a pitch from old wood and spare materials in 1986. Their team, Panyee FC, went on to win tournaments on the mainland, and the story has inspired visitors from all over the world. Look out for the pitch as your boat approaches the village.

What to see and do in the village
Koh Panyee is small, so you can see the highlights in a short walk. Here are the things most visitors enjoy:
- The mosque – its dome and minaret rise above the rooftops and make a great photo from the boat or the walkways.
- The wooden walkways – narrow lanes lead between houses, small shops and cafés. Wander slowly and watch daily life over the water.
- The market stalls – near the pier you will find stalls selling souvenirs, local snacks and dried seafood.
- The football pitch – a fun stop for photos, especially for football fans.
- The views – the limestone cliff behind the village and the bay around it are spectacular, so keep your camera ready.
Etiquette: how to be a respectful visitor
Koh Panyee is a real community, not a theme park. People live, study and pray here. A few simple habits make your visit better for everyone:
- Dress modestly. Cover your shoulders and knees when you walk through the village. A light shirt or sarong over your swimwear is enough.
- No alcohol. This is a Muslim village, and drinking alcohol is not part of local life. Please don’t bring your own.
- Ask before photographing people. Photos of the scenery are fine, but smile and ask first before taking close-up pictures of residents, especially children.
- Be quiet near the mosque. Keep your voice down and don’t enter during prayer times unless invited.
- Support local shops. Buying a snack or a small souvenir is a nice way to give back to the community.
